About the English-speaking Quebec

Did you know that*...

  • Nearly 2 million Canadians belong to our country’s two official language minority communities: the 1 million Canadians whose first official language is French who live outside Quebec; and, the 1 million Canadians whose first official language is English who live inside Quebec (collectively referred to as the English-speaking Community of Quebec.)
  • The English-speaking community of Quebec makes up 13% of Quebec’s population.
  • 3, 588, 520 people live in the Census Metropolitan Area (CMA) of Montreal.  800, 595 (22%) share English as their first official language spoken.
  • 31% of people belonging to the English-speaking community of Quebec were born outside of Canada, and that 20% are also members of a visible minority.
  • 66% of English-speaking Quebecers are bilingual, and that over 75% of English-speaking Quebecers under 40 also speak French.
  • English-speaking Quebecers are more likely than French-Quebecers to have a university degree, but less likely to members of trades.
  • English-speaking Quebecers represent much less than 2% of the Quebec civil service, and only 9% of the Federal civil service in Quebec excluding the National Capital Region. (Le Secrétariat du Conseil du trésor, and Public Service Commission of Canada)
  • The Government of Canada is committed by the Official Languages Act to enhance the vitality of the English-speaking community of Quebec and support and assist in its development. As well, the Government of Canada must foster the full recognition and use of both English and French in Canadian society. Every federal institution has the duty to ensure that positive measures are taken to implement the Government of Canada’s commitments towards the English-speaking community of Quebec, while respecting the jurisdiction and powers of Quebec.
